Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley Let the Music Dictate Their Vocals
First there was the decision of what to call the band. Florida Georgia Line? Or Georgia Florida Line?
Once that was all figured out, the duo’s Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley have had the ongoing dilemma of choosing who sings lead vocals on each song.
But it sounds like they just let the music lead the way.
“Clearly, ‘While He’s Still Around,’ I mean that’s a B.K. song,” Hubbard explained in a recent radio interview. “It wouldn’t even make sense for my voice to be on the lead in that song. It’s a special song and tells a story, and it has a purpose and a point.”
He said the same was true for their song “Island,” another son on their Dig Your Roots album.
“When it came out, we all just heard B.K.’s voice on it, and it was cool to watch that song come to life with B.K. killing the vocals in the studio,” Hubbard said.
Kelley doesn’t get enough recognition for his vocals, Hubbard says, and he’s trying to change that.
“I think there’s been times where B.K. makes the song way stronger, like ‘Dirt’ for example, having his lead on verses and choruses,” Hubbard said. “And I think it’s something that needs to be talked about, something that needs to be acknowledged more, especially on this third record.
“He stands apart, stands alone and crushes it.”
